Science Fair Projects on the Eye

If you are planning on entering the science fair contest then you will have to being your project immediately. It takes at least one month to do the project and write up the information.

After you read the following article you may want to consider doing your own investigation as to what colors are seen best by a human's eye. Get your parents and family involved, have fun, and test the colors.

Remember that the background is also an important part of the test, so keep it consistant. Why you may ask? Because without a background to define an object, you would not be able to see the object! Hmmmmmm, another interesting science fair project?

Why are school buses yellow? Why not blue or purple or majenta? Are yellow vehicles actually safer than vehicles of other colors?

Before 1939 students traveled to school in buses of all colors, shapes, and sizes because there were no standards set for constructing or manufacturing of school buses.

This caused a problem for the manufacturers because they could not make buses quickly on assembly lines. In April 1939 Frank W. Cyr organized a conference of bus manufacturers, engineers, paint companies and transportation officials to set up national standards for the construction and manufacturing of school buses. They decided that buses need to be yellow with black letters because the attendees of the conference thought that yellow and black were the easiest to see in early morning light and late afternoon.

School buses are still yellow and even has a special name National School Bus Chrome Yellow; its formula is registered with the National Bureau of Standards - Federal Standard No. 595a, Color 13432.

So, what does this have to do with science? Well, cells in the retina of our eyes respond to light with wavelengths between about 380 and 760 nanometers. This is visible light. Our brains perceive light of different wavelengths as different colors. Wavelengths between 510 and 570 nanometers are perceived as green and yellow. In fact, our eyes are most sensitive to these green/yellow wavelengths. So scientific evidence supports the 1939 conference decision to paint buses yellow: yellow is the color we see best.
