Comes complete with protective high-impact frame with glass sides, sand, food, complete instructions that will help you with you ant farm biology science fair projects.

Ants bit and sting, therefore we recommend parent supervision for the following Ant Farm Biology Science Fair Projects.
  1. Hypotheisis: Do ant's behave differently in organic soil than in chemical soil? ... build their houses different?
Experiment: Use two ant farms. Put a different type of soil in each one. Observe the ants behavior. Keep a journal every day comparing the activity and / or structure of thier home. Using a close up lens, take pictures every day to journal the changes.

  2. Hypothesis: Do ants behave differently when fed ..... than when fed .....?
Experiment: Use two ant farms. Put same kind of soil in each. Feed the ants two differnt kinds of food. In order for this to be a great study you must define "differently". In other words, be very specific about what you are measuring in your experiment. Keep a written and photo journal as suggested in experiment 1.

  3. Hypothesis: Ants are more active when their environment is at room temperature than when they are in a cold environment. Be sure to define the range of temperature for both "room" and "cold." And define for what period of time you had the ant farm in both environments.

Experiment: If the temperature is cold outside, but not freezing, you can put the ant farm outside this this part of the experiment. Take a thermometer and test the temperature is outside before you bring the ant farm on your porch or backyard. If the temperature is below freezing, then use your refrigerator, measuring the temperature inside the frigerator first.

If you have a video camera, it would be great if you can record the ants' activities. You can even put the camera in the refrigerator making sure it has an automatic sensor. If you have to put the farm in the refrig then you will have to put the ant farm in the house in a very dark room to keep the variables intact.

Record the different behavior, if any. You may want to answer the questions: Why is this important. What effect does this have on your life?

You really have two different ant farm biology science fair projects. Choose one:
    a). the effects of temperature
b). the effects of light and dark.

  4. Hypothesis: Ants can build their homes faster in wet sand than dry sand. OR another hypothesis can be: Ants' tunnels are more stablize and last longer in wet sand compared to dry sand.

Experiment: Use 2 different ant farms. Before you put the ants into the "farm", fill one with wet sand and the other with dry sand. Write your observations in a journal as well as photograph what happens a couple of times a day. If you can run a video for a specific length of time every day to record your findings, that's even better.

Compare your results and draw conclusions from your observations for your ant farm biology science fair projects.
