Have a hands-on experience of studying the effects of antibiotics on microorganisms.

This kit is based on the Bauer-Kirby test. It investigates the effectivenss of three antibiotics using disks of penicillin, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline on a petri dish. The following day you will measure the clear "zones of inhibition" (clear zones of growth) around each disk to find out which of the three antibiotics were most effective against each bacteria.

EasyGel has pre-sterilized growth media and petri dishes that are ready to use for your experiments. There is no fuss and bother. Just pour the Easygel® into the pre-treated plate and get a sterile gel in 45 minutes!

FYI: The Kirby-Bauer test, known as the disk-diffusion method, is the most widely used antibiotic susceptibility test in determing what treatment of antibiotics need to be used when treating an infection. This method relies on the inhibition of bacterial growth measured under standard conditions. To test, a culture medium is uniformly and aseptically inoculated with the test organism.

The organism will grow on the agar plate while the antibiotic “works” to inhibit the growth. If the organism is susceptible to a specific antibiotic, there will be no growth around the disc containing the antibiotic. Thus, a “zone of inhibition” can be observed and measured to determine the susceptibility to an antibiotic for that particular organism.
