Description
The American Educational 310 transparent 12" celestial globe includes an earth globe, sun globe, and a teacher's guide. The celestial globe maps constellations for students studying astronomy in grades 5-12. It contains a printed 4" earth globe and 3/4" yellow sun mounted inside the star globe that both rotate independently and demonstrate the earth's apparent relationship to the stars, planets, and galaxies.

The meridian may be tilted to adjust the globe for latitude while the horizon ring indicates the actual horizon in relation to the point of observation on Earth.

It comes with a 26 page instruction book that describes how to set the globe for place and time, and how to use it to illustrate the concepts of apparent motion, seasons, latitude and longitude, right ascension and declination, altitude and azimuth, apparent motion of the sun, time, and various aspects of observing the stars.

Example of lesson in Teacher's guide: "Using the Planet Position Tables (given in the manual), determine what planets are visible in the evening sky for the date of observation." There are various data sheets included that can be used to record observations.

  • Provides a "preview" of the night sky before going outside in the evening to observe the heavens.
  • You can trace the sun along the ecliptic, "zero" in your location and point it to the zenith, and understand the apparent motion of the stars at different latitudes.
  • It is a great tool to teach children about the movement of the sun and stars. something difficult to visualize. It truly is one of the coolest teaching tool I have seen for observational astronomy.
  • The instruction booklet includes references to other resources.
