For students that have their hearts set on winning a science fair project 3 month science fair projects are what you will want to focus your attention on. These projects give you the time needed to develop intense and complex science experiments, as well as the time needed to gather a significant amount of data. If properly designed and executed you can blow the judges away with these projects.

Biochemistry science fair projects work well for 3 month science fair projects. Your first biochemistry project is to study the colonization of household bacteria. The hypothesis for this experiment is that household bacteria will colonize at a constant rate. The independent variable for this project will be time and the dependent variable will be the colonization rate.

You can expand upon this experiment by changing your variables a bit. For example, your new hypothesis can be that the colonization rate of household bacteria will increase as temperatures increase. The independent variable in this case will be the temperature of the project and the dependent variable will be the colonization rate. If you are working with hazardous bacteria make sure you take the proper precautions.

Another variation on this experiment is to change the growing medium that you use for your bacteria project. In this experiment your hypothesis would be that the growing medium affects the colonization rate of household bacteria. In this project the independent variable will be the type of growing medium that you use and the dependent variable would be the colonization rate.

If you are interested in the effectiveness of household cleaning products then you can change your hypothesis to: the presence of a household cleaner in the bacteria growing medium will inhibit the colonization rate of the bacteria. The independent variable for this project would be the presence or absence of cleaning products in your growing medium and the dependent variable would be the colonization rate.

The final variation for these 3 month science fair projects is to test if the amount of light the bacteria is exposed to affects its colonization rate. This project will require you to set up several projects. One experiment will keep the bacteria in darkness 24 hours a day, one experiment will keep the bacteria in the light 24 hours a day and your other experiments will vary the amount of light and darkness that each Petrie dish is exposed to.
