Chromatography science fair projects utilize special porous papers to examine the different layers of chemical compounds found within a solution. Basic chromatography experiments typically work with colored solutions with the goal of separating out the various dies or natural colors found within the solution. If you are interested in biochemistry experiments then try out some of the following projects.

The first type of color chromatography as a science fair project that you can complete will use water soluble markers. The washable markers work the best for this experiment. To complete this project simply draw a thick line of marker across the bottom of your chromatography paper and watch as the color separate out. What did you notice about the results from dark colors compared to light colors?

The second type of color chromatography as a science fair project that you can complete will use coffee. In this experiment you will dunk the end of your chromatography paper in a cup of strong coffee and watch what happens. To advance this experiment try comparing different brands of coffees from different regions of the world. Note the differences in color saturations. Now compare your chromatography results to the strength or bitterness of the coffee. Are there any correlations?

The next biochemistry science fair projects that you can complete using chromatography paper is to test candy coatings. In this experiment you will need to moisten the candy shells of your favorite candy products and then rub them on a chromatography paper. Note differences in color combinations used by different candy companies. Also not similarities.

The fourth free 4th grade science fair projects that you can complete with chromatography paper is to test soda pop. In this experiment dip the end of your chromatography paper in your favorite flavored sodas. Compare the colors left behind by colas compared to those left behind by orange, strawberry and root beer sodas. What does this tell you about the soda pops that you drink?

The final option that you have is to test semi-solid foods with your chromatography papers. For example, you can test yogurt, smoothies and even soups. Design an experiment that links chromatography results to nutrition or the healthiness of the foods and drinks that you consumer. What did you discover?
