Before you create photosynthesis project boards, you first need to design and complete your botany science fair projects. The focus of your project will determine what illustrations you use, what props you supplement your board with and what information you include. Below is an example botany science experiment that looks at the process of photosynthesis.

Note: If you want to use photographs to illustrate your photosynthesis project boards, then you will need to take pictures during your biochemistry science fair projects. It is a good idea to photograph your materials before you use them, your experiment setup, and then take one photograph of each experiment station each day of your experiment. Lastly, take a final photograph to illustrate your results.

LIGHTS OUT

PROBLEM: Do plants need sunlight to be green?

RESEARCH: Read about chlorophyll in a science book. Write two or three paragraphs about chlorophyll. Be sure to write in your own words.

HYPOTHESIS: Based on your research about chlorophyll, do you think the leaves will stay green without chlorophyll?

MATERIALS:

  • plant with broad leaves (may be inside or outside)
  • black construction paper
  • transparent material (such as a plastic bag)
  • scissors
  • tape
  • PROCEDURE:

    1. Cut two pieces of black construction paper large enough to cover each of five leaves.

    2. Sandwich each of the five leaves between two pieces of construction paper.

    3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 using the transparent material and cover five different leaves.

    4. Each day for five days remove the construction paper and the transparent material from one leaf each.

    5. Record your observations of the changes for both types of leaf covers.

DATA: Record your observations for five days.

CONCLUSION: This is not optional. You must explain what you learned by doing this activity.

Remember that you must answer the question you asked in your original problem statement.

Now that your experiment is over it is time to design your photosynthesis project boards. To start with you will want to look at the photographs that you took during your experiment. You may need to resize your photos to make them easier to see when they are attached to your project board. Next look at your photographs to determine what color of poster board or foam board to use. White boards are going to be the least expensive and the easiest to find. However, unless you are ready to put in a lot of work adding design elements to the board, they can be a bit boring.

Next you need to determine what information to include. Your board will need (1) a title, (2) your hypothesis, (3) steps for your experiment, (4) the data you collected and (5) your results. You will need to find a way to present this information in a visual format that will be easy to read and that will fit on your board. You can stencil, free hand or cut and paste your text onto your board.

The final step is to layout your project board. "C" projects will just glue the graphics and texts directly onto a white poster board in a logical fashion. "B" projects will add a few extra visual elements such as adding a color mat to the graphics and utilizing higher quality graphic images. "A" projects will include text points that cover all six steps of the scientific method, high quality graphics, and extra visual design elements.
