Background Information
Lessening our dependence on fossil fuels is critical to the health of all living things, and wind energy can do just that.

The three billion kWh of electricity annually produced by America's wind machines displace the energy equivalent of 6.4 million barrels of oil and avoid 1.67 million tons of carbon emissions, as well as sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions that cause smog and acid rain.

In other words, more wind power means less smog, acid rain, and greenhouse gas emissions.

 

 


This basic windmill kit is perfect for your more advanced 5th and 6th grade students (with supervision). 7th grade students and above we suggest you look at more advanced type of experiments here.



PicoTurbine Windmill Kit V2 is a fully functioning Savonius wind turbine. It stands 8" tall and produces between 2.0-3.0 volts which is enough to light up a bicolor LED (included). The LED flashes red and green to show the alternating current produced. The kit can be easily built in less than one hour. With some adult supervision the kit can be built by children as young as 10 years old.

The kit can be easily built in under one hour, less time if used as a group project. Children as young as 10 years old can build the project with some adult supervision.

PicoTurbine is the only kit of its kind to demonstrate the power of wind as a renewable energy resource. The instructor's guide contains classroom ideas and experiments, as well as technical notes for older children or adult experimenters.

Test different wind turbine blade configurations, various generator components, the effects of changing wind speeds, or other experiments that are only limited by your imagination.

Each kit includes all the parts you need:

  • 4 pre-wound coils of enamel coated copper wire

  • 4 ceramic grade-5 magnets

  • 1 (5 1/4”) disk

  • 1 bicolor light emitting diode (LED) with 2 leads

  • 1 (1/2”) Phillips head (cross slot) screw

  • 1 eye-hook screw

  • 1 wooden dowel

  • 1 piece of wood about 6” by 6” and ½” thick (for the base)

  • 1 strip of double-sided tape

  • 1 small piece of sandpaper for stripping the copper wire

The blades can be made from various materials such as plastic bottles, alumimum cans (parent supervision), heavy cardboard, or other materials.


 Note: This kit comes unassembled. You build the windmill.
