Earth science fair projects for kids have the potential to be both extraordinarily dull and extraordinarily exciting. The key for developing an exciting science fair project is to first develop your topic properly. Before you can develop your topic, you first need to select a basic topic to work with. Topics for fun earth science experiments include: water, soil, germination and geology.

The first basic topic that you can base your earth science fair projects for kids on is water. Water has a lot of unique properties that kids can have fun with. They can experiment with the various states of water, such as ice, liquid and gas, or they can experiment with sticky quality of water. Osmosis is another great water topic that kids can play around with.

Air is another fun topic to explore when developing earth science fair projects for kids. Air experiments can focus on movement of air currents or on pollution. One easy air pollution experiment is to take a coffee filter and hold it over the opening of an exhaust pipe. This will collect the pollution produced by a vehicle on the filter.

Soil samples can also be used to develop earth science fair projects for kids. Soil experiments can focus either on the composition of the soil or chemical makeup of the soil. For example, kids can compare the properties of soil made from a sandy mixture and soil made from a clay mixture. Students can get ideas for their soil earth science experiments by going to a local nursery or quarry.

In addition to air, water and soil, students can also design a science fair project around geological formations and processes. For example, students can visit a local geological formation to chart the stratifications of the formation, identify fossils and recreate the past environments of the area. Students can also explore geological processes of weathering by charting the weathering of their playground equipment, by charting the weathering of local geological features or by creating a model that demonstrates geological processes.

Earth science fair projects for kids don't have to be dull. By bringing kids out into the field to conduct earth science experiments, teachers and parents will show kids how earth science concepts apply to the real world... and the kids will be intrigued.

Science Fair Tip: Before you go into the field, have students conduct research in the library for their science fair projects because this will more aware of their environment.
