Free science fair projects ideas using soil can be very helpful, especially if this is your first science fair project, or if you are looking for a unique project that will win over the judges. Earth science science fair experiments that deal with soil can focus on anything you want from soil microbes to soil contamination. Below are several soil project ideas that are based on actual science fair projects.

The first project from the list of free science fair projects ideas using soil is to test the chemical makeup of various soil samples. To complete this project you will need soil samples from several locations. Once you have your coidl samples you will be able to test the soil for its pH level and the chemical compounds that are found in the soil.

The second project from the list of free science fair projects ideas using soil is to test soil samples for contaminants. You can develop earth science fair experiments that test soil samples for lead, heavy metals or toxins. There are science kits that you can buy that will provide you with the chemicals and test strips required for this experiment. To make this project your own, you will apply the results from your experiments to make new connections between the soil contaminant and the local ecosystem.

Another project idea that you can try is to see if the chemical makeup of local soil is simliar to the chemical compounds found in hair samples collected from people who live in the area. This is a very interesting science fair project that did very well at the Hawaii state science fair. You can make this project your own by seeing if soil and hair samples contain more toxins than soil and hair samples collected from rural test subjects.

Your fourth project idea is to test the fertility of different types of soil. For example, you can test the fertility of sand, volcanic ash, local top soil and clay soil mixes. You can also test the fertility of various types of bagged potting soil to see which one actually produces more food or healthier plants. If one potting soil does seem to produce a healthier plant, then you can look at its ingredients to see what is making it more effective.

The final project idea is to compare the effectiveness of organic fertilizers to the effectiveness of chemical fertilizers. You can also look at how various types of fertilizers affect ecosystems and water systems. Finally, you can see if rotating crops is a more effective fertilization method than adding a third party fertilizer.
