Earth science experiments that look at extreme tsunamis...
Tsunamis are huge waves that are generated by undersea tremors and fault slips. When these waves make landfall they flood the area and cause devastation. Tsunami science fair experiments for 4th graders are great for learning more about this very interesting subject. Below you will find five ideas for earth science experiments that look at the tsunami phenomenon.
The first option that you have for tsunami science fair experiments for 4th graders is to look at what characteristics designate high risk tsunami zones. In these earth science projects you will examine what undersea geological features are required to develop a tsunami risk. You will want to look at undersea fault lines. What cities in the United States are vulnerable to a tsunami? The second option that you have for tsunami science fair experiments for 4th graders is exploring current tsunami warning systems. Earth science experiments that explore tsunami warning systems can look at how tsunamis are detected, what alert programs are in place and how tsunamis are tracked. To advance this project you will want to try and develop a more effective tsunami warning system. Think about how satellite systems could be utilized in a global warning system. The third option that you have for really good science fair projects that deal with tsunamis is to create a case study of a historical tsunami event. You can examine recent tsunamis, or you can explore ancient tsunamis that are just now being explored. Think about how a scientist would find evidence that would suggest that a tsunami had hit an area. Documentaries on tsunamis are great resources for this type of project. The fourth option that you have for a tsunami project is to look at what signs precede a tsunami. In this project you will want to examine what people can look for, like waterlines drawing back and animals running for higher ground. After you have identified typical signs, use your imagination to think of other signs that scientists may be overlooking. How could these signs be used to predict impending tsunamis and how can they be used to improve current warning systems. Now that you have a few project ideas to work with, you will want to think of ways to advance them and make them unique. When you advance a science fair project you will want to first identify a variable that you can manipulate. In the case of a tsunami experiment the variables that you can manipulate include how deep your research goes, the region your study or the element of the tsunami you want to study.
