Science! Energy! Action!

Image of PicoTurbine WindmillEnergy science fair projects, like all science projects, include three things:

. What makes a good energy science experiment for kids? Energy--yours and science! . A problem to solve--what's the question you want answered?

. What do you already think the answer (hypothosis) is?

. Finally... the experiment that will prove or disprove the hypothesis.

Once you have these three things, science and its projects are cool things to do!

A good energy science experiment for kids will include three pieces:

  • The piece that you control (controlled variable); the setting and how you do the experiment.

  • The piece that changes (experimental variable), the products you use for the experiment.

  • And, the piece that changes BECAUSE of the products, setting and manner of the experiment.

  • These simple, scientific rules for every science experiment will result in fun and winning science projects every time.

A good way to do physics or chemistry experiments is to use science fair kits. The kits include sample science projects that lead you through all the steps of what questions to ask, how to set up the experiments and what products to use. They are like a science teacher in a box.

You could probably even find a kit to do a space science project. Ever wonder what energy is in outer space?

A quick and easy energy science experiment for kids is to make a thermometer. Fill a bottle 25% full with equal amounts of water and alcohol. Add a few drops of food coloring and stick in a straw, but don't let the straw touch the bottom of the bottle. Use clay to seal the top of the bottle, then hold the bottle in your hands and watch the colored mixture rise through the straw with the heat from your hand. You've just created energy that makes something happen. A project without a lab or very many supplies, yet a good, solid science experiment.

Sources of energy come from all around us. Ever see windmills along the road or in the field of a farm? These create energy every time the wind blows. Ever use a calculator that doesn't have batteries? This works from the light, and we have houses that are heated every time the sun shines. Ever see a volcano? The earth heats rocks over and over in it's center and as long as these things keep happening, the earth will keep making energy. This is called renewable energy, and as long as the earth is here, so is its energy.

Speaking of the earth and its energy brings us to pollution and the ways in which pollution drain the earths energy. Some of the ways we create pollution is:

  • When we use electricity.

  • When we drive the car.

  • When we read the newspaper and toss it in the garbage.

  • By thinking of the ways we pollute and changing those activities, we help save energy.

The the question is what kind of energy science experiment for kids can you develop that will help the planet?

Helping the earth renew its energy is simple, easy and oftentimes fun.

  • Plant trees for shade and more oxygen production.

  • Open house shades in the sun for warmth, close them at night to hold the warmth.

  • In the summer, reverse the previous activity.

  • Recycle, recycle, recycle--papers, plastics, and cans.

  • Stop pollution to renew the earth's energy, because renewable energy is good science action.
