Yes, it is hard to believe that you friendly, helpful electronics gadget, your computer, leaves off 2% of the carbon dioxide emissions.
Reported by Times Online in the UK, it stated that "performing two Google searches from a desktop computer can generate about the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle" or about 7g of CO2 per search." Later they said that if you perform a couple of searches for the same topic over a couple of minutes, this static occurs.

So here is one of many computer conservation science fair projects that you can do to reduce carbon dioxide emission in your home, school or workplace and save money at the same time.

Hypothesis
Turing off one computer for 8 hours a day reduces energy consumption by 2%. This includes turning off the power strip and unplugging the power strip from the wall socket. If you don't have a power strip, then unplugging the computer cord from the wall.

Materials Needed

  • Computer that is plugged into the wall socket or power stip.

  • Electric bill from previous month.

  • Electric bill from the month you are preforming your experiment.

  • Procedure

    1. Keep your computer on and running for one month.

    2. Turn off your computer and unplug it from the power strip or wall socket for one month.
    3. Get your electric bill for both months from your utilities company.
    4. Make a comparison between the cost of electricity and the wattages used.

A side benefit of this experiment is that you will be emitting less co2 into your environment.
