- Set your computer to sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity.
- If you use Microsoft, to save energy, right click on an empty space on your desktop. Click on Properties, then Screen Saver tab. You will see a button named, Power Saver. Click on that and reset your timer. Then hit apply.
- When you are done working for the day, turn off your computer, then turn off the power strip and unplug the power strip from the wall socket. Why? Because electrical current runs thru the cord even when the computer or any other appliance is turned off.
- Screen savers do not reduce energy use by monitors. Switch to sleep mode or manually turn your monitors off is a energy-saving strategy.
- For your next computer consider buying a laptop because they use much less energy than desktop computers.
- Configure your computer to "hibernate" automatically after 30 minutes or less of inactivity. The "hibernate mode" turns the computer off in a way that doesn't require you to reload everything when you switch it back on. Allowing your computer to hibernate saves energy and is more time-efficient than shutting down and restarting your computer from scratch. When you're done for the day, shut down. How to hiberate your PC
- Turn off your personal computer when you're away from your PC for 20 minutes or more, and both the CPU and the monitor if you will be away for two hours or more.
