See how to save water and electricity in the kitchen!
Are you looking for dishwashing energy science fair projects?
- Only run dishwashers when they are full and use the economy cycle for everyday washing.
- Instead of using the drying cycle, stop the dishwasher, open the door and let dishes dry naturally. It takes more energy to dry dishes than to wash them. In cold weather this is a good way to naturally add moisture to the air.
- If you have a no-heat air-dry feature on your dishwasher, then use it. Some people say that by using the no-heat dry feature or air drying the dishes increases the drying time. Also that it may increased spotting. It is worth trying these dishwasher conservtion strategies.
- Wash dishes in the sink when possible.
- Turn down your water heater thermostat if your dishwasher has a booster heater. A setting of 120 F for your water heater will be fine. When your water is at a lower temperature your washing cycle will take less time, therefore saving electrical energy.
- Don’t pre-rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Modern dishwashers do a superb job of cleaning even heavily soiled dishes. Scrape off food and empty liquids—the dishwasher will do the rest.
- Use cold water to rinse dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
- Wash only full loads. The dishwasher uses the same amount of water whether it’s half-full or completely full. Less water and energy is used by running a filled dishwasher than washing your dishes by hand.
If you currently wash dishes by hand and fill sinks or plastic tubs with water, it’s pretty easy to figure out whether you would use less water with a dishwasher. Simply measure how much water it takes to fill the wash and rinse containers. If you wash dishes by hand 2 to 3 times a day, you might be surprised to find out how much water you’re currently using. Whether or not you will save energy by switching from washing-by-hand to using a dishwasher depends on both the dishwasher and how you wash the dishes by hand.
- Load dishes according to manufacturer’s instructions. Completely fill the racks to optimize water and energy use, but allow proper water circulation for adequate cleaning.
If you have kids that help in the kitchen, the best way to bring increase their awareness is to have them do science fair projects about energy conservation.
