This science fair project requires you to uncover what is called leaking energy, standby loss, phantom power or ghost load. Yes, all the electonics in you house, school or workplace that are not unplugged from the wall are running electricity, costing you and your family money, and harming the environment.

Did you know that 2% of the carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S. come from just computers? _ Statistics come from the results of a study. And how about that cell phone power cord that you forget to unplug after charging your batteries?

Definitions you need to know

Electonics = all devices that have a digital display

Electronics unplugged from the wall - this does not include large appliances like your refrigerator, stand-alone freezer or stove (unless you have an electric stove and it is easy for you to unplug it)

Devices to unplug: surge protectors, computers, cell phone chargers, all small appliances like toasters, blenders, coffee makers, electric toothbrushes, microwave, TV's, all AC adapters, computers, printers, stereo, stero speakers, DVDs, etc

Hypthesis
When all electronics are unplugged from the wall 8 hours a day, the electric bill is reduced 20%.

Materials Needed

  • Parent's permission to do experiment and supervise unplugging of electronics

  • Checklist of every digital product in your house

  • Electric bill from month that you do your science project

  • Electric bill from previous month to doing your electonrics energy conservation science fair projects

  • Procedure
If no one is at home during the day you can unplug all electronic appliances from the way, but you must be consistant with how many hours the devices are unplugged every day of the week.

    1. Make a checklist of every electronics, gadget in your home. Name the rooms in your house and list the gadgets in each room.
    2. Go through you house at a designated time and turn off all the gadgets / devices / appliances on your list every single day for 30 days. This includes unplugging them from the wall.
    3. The next day only turn on the gadgets when you need to use them.
    4. At the end of 30 days request your electric bill from your utility company and make a comparison between the month's bill in which you did your experiment and one from the previous month.

More projects: You can calculate your household's carbon footprint before and after the above experiment with a free online carbon footprint calculator.
