Kitchen / Laundry Water Saving Conservation Tips
How To Save Water in the Kitchen
  1. Repair plumbing leaks and fix dripping faucets.
  2. Install low-flow aerator on all faucets.
  3. Do not leave water running when rinsing dishes.
  4. Do not use running water to thaw meat or other frozen foods.

Dishwasher
  • Only use your dishwasher when it is filled to capacity.
  • Avoid using extra cycles.
  • Purchase an ENERGY STAR qualified diswasher.
  • Repair all leaks.
  • Check all connections and be sure they are tight and dry.

Handwashing Dishes

  • Scrape dishes.
  • Don't prerinse.
  • Soak pots, pans and very dirty dishes before washing.
  • Fill wash basins with water. Some people like to fill a rinse basin but I find that the waer gets dirty and that dirty water can turn to bacteria when left on your "clean" dishes.
  • Use minimum amount of detergent.

Garbage Disposal

  • Use sink disposal unit sparingly, (always run cold water when in use)
  • Use a garbage bag or compost heap instead.

Food Preparation

  • Fill a bowl with water. Then dip a brush in the waer to wash vegetables.
  • Do not run water to thaw frozen food. Defrost in refrigerator.
  • Cook vegetables with a minimum amount of water. Purchase a set of waterless cookware.
  • Use soup stock from cooking water.

Drinking Water

  • Keep a container of cold water in the refrigerator for cold drinks instead of running your water.
  • Make only the amount of coffee, tea, or other hot drink that you use in a day.

How To Save Water in the Laundry
Did you know that 10% or more of all water used in your household is used in the washing machine? Therefore, a small investment of time and money can pay off to reduce your carbon footprint.

Clothes Washer
  • Select the load size to adjust the water level to the size of each load.
  • If there is no load size selector then only do only full loads.
  • Pre-soak heavily soiled items.
  • Use a minimum amount of detergent.
  • Check the hose and faucet connections for leaks. Repair or replace when necessary.
  • Check pipes for pinhole leaks or leaking joints.
  • If buying a new washer, choose ENERGY STAR qualified washer and one that has conservation features.
