Sailboats science fair projects can help you to explore science in a whole new way. In the following engineering experiments you will be manipulating the components of a sailboat's design to make it go farther, faster or to make it safer. Fun, entertaining and you get to play with boats, not bad for a homework assignment.

CEN RACING - Grey Thunder 28+ MPH (Nitro .16 engine)

The first option that you have for your sailboats science fair projects is to work on the design of the sail. The traditional sail design is a triangle. To make things interesting try other shapes. For example, try a cicular sail or a rectangular sail. After experimenting with other shapes return to the triangle and see if it is the standard shape for a reason.

The second option that you have for your sailboats science fair projects is to work on the hull design of your boat. The hull is the bottom of your boat. Try modifying the angle of the curve used for the hull, or try experimenting with hydrodynamic design features like fins. What other aspects of the hull's design can you modify? Before you start modifying the hull design select a goal for the modification, such as to make the boat go faster or to cut safely through ice.

The material that your sailboat is made out of can also be used as the independent variable for a sailboat experiment. For example, you can hypothesize that plastic will make a better model boat material because it is smooth and lightweight. You can test this hypothesis by comparing the performance of a plastic sailboat to that of a metal or fiberglass sailboat. Is plastic better? Why or why not?

Another independent variable that you can manipulate in your engineering based science fair projects is the weight of the sailboat. You can hypothesize that heavier sailboats will do better in the ocean than they will in fresh bodies of water. To test this hypothesis you will need to test sailboats of various weights in both freshwater and saltwater. Then you will need to find correlations bewteen the weight of the sailboat, its performance and whether it was sailed in fresh or saltwater.

Now you have four good ideas to work with when developing your own sailboats science fair projects. Your job now is to take these ideas and expand on them or to modify them to make them your own. Use your own insights and expertise to develop science fair projects that will blow your competition out of the water and make the judges stand back and say, "Wow!" Good luck, and have fun.
