If you are looking for a topic for your environmental science fair projects, then the PicoTurbine Windmill is the best kit I know for middle school thru high school students for their science fair.

To begin, before you can design your project, you will need to narrow down this topic to a testable hypothesis. There are a lot of different hypotheses that you can create for your wind velocity science fair projects.

You can focus your science fair projects' hypotheses on the design of your wind turbine, you can focus them on the design of the windmill's blades or you can focus them on the application of wind velocity to a current energy problem. You can also formulate your hypotheses so that they try to solve a current problem, like generating enough energy with wind velocity to replace X number of barrels of crude oil.

After coming up with a hypothesis for your wind velocity science fair projects you next need to design your experiment. The experiments that you design will need to focus on answering a specific questions raised by your hypothesis. For example, if your hypothesis is "wind velocity in the San Diego area is adequate for generating enough power for 10 percent of the energy needs of this area" then you will need to design two experiments.

The first experiment/research project will be designed to determine how much energy is used by 10 percent of the population and the second experiment will be designed to determine how much power can be generated by the average wind velocity in the area.

Once you have the science experiment designed for your science fair projects, you will next need to determine what tools you will need. The PicoTurbine Windmill is a perfect science fair kit for this purpose. For most wind velocity science fair projects you will need tools to measure the speed of wind and a tool to determine the direction of the wind. Both of these tools are required because velocity in measured in terms of speed and direction.

Other pieces of equipment that you could possibly need include: wind turbine, spreadsheet software program, computer, project journal and calculator.

Now that you have all the tools needed for your project you are ready to start your experiment. As you conduct your science experiments you will need to take detailed notes about your observations. Each entry in your project journal will need to be labeled with the date, time and environmental conditions. These basic pieces of information will be used to determine if the results from the experiment were contaminated by unplanned variables like unusual weather fronts or solar flares.

In addition to this basic information you will also want to include properly labeled measurements, definitions of terminology used and detailed notes on what you observe. These pieces of information will be used as your raw data and will also be used during the analysis of your data.

The analysis of your data is one of the more difficult components of a science fair project. Younger scientists can get away with simply stating the data that they found and relating it to their hypothesis without statistical backup. However, as you get older, your teachers and science fair judges are going to expect you to use statistical analysis tools during the analysis of your data.

Middle school and high school students have the math skills needed to perform basic statistical analysis of data sets such as finding the mean, mode, median and standard deviation of data points. If you are interested in creating a more advanced analysis of your data then you can use more advanced statistical tools.
