Cereal science fair projects can focus on the nutritional elements of cereal or they can focus on the physical properties of cereal. This means that you have more than one way to go with your cereal science experiments. To get you started, try out this electrical science fair project that makes puffed cereal jump into the air.

"Observe Puffed cereal leap into the air."

Stuff you Need

  • Puffed Rice Cereal
  • Plate
  • Wool Cloth
  • Old Record
  • How to do it

  • Pour cereal onto plate
  • Rub one side of record with wool cloth
  • Hold rubbed side of record over cereal then slowly move it toward the cereal
  • Observe the cereal jump to the record
  • Result

Cereal will leap into air and some will stick to the record.

    Why

Due to static electricity the cereal is electrically charged and is attracted to record.

    Extra stuff to do

  • Try with other cereal
  • Rub with different items
  • Try with sugar instead of cereal
  • So you know that static electricity can make cereal jump into the air, so what other physical properties of cereal can you test? One physical property you can test is the chemical makeup of different cereals. For example you can design an iron in cereal science project or you can design a project to see how the chemical makeup of a cereal makes it reactive or non-reactive to the acids in milk.

If you aren't interested in cereal chemistry science fair projects then you can design a cereal science project that examines the shape of the cereal. For example, you can test to see which cereal shape is more buoyant in milk, which absorbs the most milk and which shape packs the loudest crunch.

This is definitely a topic that you can have a lot of fun with so be creative. Try to think of food science fair projects that no one else has thought of. If you are having a hard timing coming up with ideas visit your local supermarket and document how many different types of cereals are on the market. Look at the different shapes, the colors used, the packaging, the texture and the flavors used to attract consumers. You may also want to research what the most popular cereal is in the U.S. and then compare that to the most popular cereals consumed in other countries. Regional preferences within the U.S. can also be examined. Use this information to develop your science fair project.
