Science Learning Characteristics of Third Grader's

  • 3rd graders possess courage, confidence, and are open to new experiences at school.
  • In their work they want to understand the reasons things happen.
  • They start to find a particular subject that interests them and enjoy mastering skills in other subjects.
  • At home, you will find that in their strive to become more independent, they do not talk about school as much.
  • Your 3rd grader's command of language is growing rapidly, and s/he enjoys using her linguistic power to argue, converse, create, debate, and explain.
  • They enjoy discussing the things they learn about and the books they read.
  • Their organization, logical thinking and problem solving also improves this year. They’re frequently make connections about the world in deeper and more abstract ways.
  • 3rd grader's anxiety increases from 2nd grade over academic achievement and standardized tests increase your child's competitiveness. Support your child as they go thru this transition. They need a place to feel safe to communicate their feelings without judgement.


What 3rd Graders Learn in Science
Third grade students start to learn the connection and interdependence of things in the world around them.

  • Students explore more complex natural systems, such as relationships between the Earth, moon and sun; weather concepts, living systems like the food chain.
  • They may learn about bodies of water and land masses, and how to identify them on a globe or map.
  • They may investigate different states of matter such as solids, liquids, and gases; observe the behaviors of sound and light. They’ll be asked to make educational guesses (hypotheses) about their observation.
