Before you begin it is important to make a distinctionce to experiment

  • Opportunities to explore
  • Pictorial ways / materials to record observations
  • A safe place to explore and express
    "A child's play is his/her work."
    Biology
    Botany
    Chemistry
    Earth Science
    Physics
    Zoology

Kindergarten children have unlimited curiosity and are eager to learn. They are naturally inquisitive and enthusiastic. They just sop up information through hands-on experiences.

Create an atmosphere of learning where children feel free to use their creativity, explore and problem solve. The science skills they learn will be the building blocks throughout their primary grades.

    • Need structure and direction from teacher or parent

Kindergarteners learn thru discovery and active hands-on exploration. Their world makes sense when they are able to experience it physically.

    • Rachel Carson said it best, kindergarten children learn from a "sense of wonder". The world is a puzzle to them and they figure out those puzzles by exploring, asking more questions, and constructing explanations.
    • Children in kindergarten wonder about concepts that they fully comprehend do not comprehend. For instance, they may believe that it’s possible to stand on a cloud, even though they know that it’s made up of water droplets.
    • Children of this age can usually follow directions from her teacher and focus on tasks. In preschool kids are given more free play time while in kindergarten the teacher knows that the children can be asked to complete a short assignment like drawing a garden.

Characteristics of a Great Learning Environment - provide activities so children can learn in all
3 modalities: seeing, hearing and feeling (touching).

  • Objects to touch
  • Place to experiment
  • Opportunities to explore
  • Pictorial ways / materials to record observations
  • A safe place to explore and express
    "A child's play is his/her work."
