Going the Distance... When students enter high school there is quite a difference in the science competency of kids who are interested in science and those that are not. Because of this, teachers and administrators need to focus on encouraging more kids to become interested in science and to nurture the interests of those with advanced skills. One way to do this is to provide students with the opportunity to work on high school engineering science fair projects. Building topics are very popular for high school engineering science fair projects. Building projects can focus specifically on a type of building, like a skyscraper, or on the general field of architecture. Building projects will need to include both the theoretical foundation for the building design, as well as the design itself. Bridges are another very popular topic for high school engineering science fair projects. Bridge experiments can strive for creating long, taller or stronger bridges. They can also focus on using innovative materials or shapes. As mentioned above, buildings and bridges are very popular with high school science fair participants, however, there are other construction projects that students can work on. Infrastructure design projects are another option that you have. Students can design more effective freeways, they can design freeways that can withstand earthquakes or they can work on solving common infrastructure design problems. Mass transit system design projects are also a great option. Mass transit safety issues, for example, can be explored to help minimize the threat of terrorism attacks. Mass transit system projects can also include: a study of the efficiency of current mass transit system, design improvements for handling larger commuting populations and designing mass transit systems that rely on non-fossil fuel vehicles. High school engineering science fair projects come in many forms. Students need to develop engineering based science fair projects that interest them and that will be practical for their science fair projects deadline.
