Kids Love Bug World

Remember when you were a kid and was fascinated by all those crawling creatures? Well, now your kids can engage in over 25 science activities. They will observe and learn about bugs, insects and plant life and how they are an integrel part of the earth.

Geology - or earth science - studies the makeup of our planet: its terrain and landscapes, its minerals, metals, and other natural resources, and the principles behind geological change - like continental drift and the formation of various kinds of rocks. You can explore this fascinating discipline with earth science homeschool projects. Here are a few ideas you might want to consider.

  • Your science project can study the astonishing diversity of rocks out there and the different ways in which these rocks form. Some of them are created through volcanic eruptions, while others are formed by means of sedimentation. Many rocks are actually fossilized imprints of the skeletons of organisms that lived millions of years ago. There are even specimens of petrified wood out there - wood that has been turned into rock over millions of years!
  • Earth science homeschool projects can be greatly benefited by a kit of samples of various rocks. Using such a kit, you can create a display of various kinds of rocks - explaining their formation, their composition, and the areas of the world where they are most commonly found. Your science research can also focus of applications of these rocks to our world. Are they used for building or for manufacturing? Are some of these rocks extremely valuable? Are some of them used for art or jewelry? You'll be surprised at the vast array of uses for these natural resources!
  • Further science ideas for earth science homeschool projects include the study of continental drift. Why does the Western coast of Africa seem to fit into the Eastern coast of South America? The two continents used to be one before they drifted apart hundreds of millions of years ago.

India, too, used to be detached from the Asian subcontinent until it collided into Asia - forming the Himalayas, the tallest mountains in the world. Tectonic plate dynamics can explain how and why these fascinating events happened. Studying continental drift is great for high school projects and middle school projects about science.

  • Your science education can also be extended in new and fascinating directions with earth science homeschool projects about energy sources like fossil fuels, hydroelectricity, geothermal energy, nuclear power, and hydrogen power.

Our Earth and the materials found on it have been harnessed in an impressive variety of ways to power virtually every aspect of our lives. Where do these energy sources originate, and how do people transform them into electricity and mechanical power? Science activities exploring these topics are highly interesting and relevant to our world.

You can find top-quality materials for teaching science and conducting earth science homeschool projects. Take a look at some more possibilities for great earth science experiments.
