FEATURED PRODUCT!

Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Reflector Telescope is easy to use with hand contorls for precise alignment.

Would you like to view details of the lunar surface, see the rings of Saturn or the polar ice caps on Mars? Or how about the cloud belts on Jupiter or a number of the Messier objects using the additional light-gathering capabilities of the 5? primary mirror?

The 130 SLT comes with a fully computerized, ergonomically-designed hand control that gives you the ability to automatically slew to any of its 4,000+ objects, including over 600 galaxies, 300 clusters, and dozens of beautiful binary stars. New SkyAlign technology and the included StarPointer Finderscope with a red LED also assist in fast, accurate alignment.

Telescopes are not new to the history of science. Galileo used the first telescope in the early 17th century to study the position and movements of celestial objects. Almost four centuries later, telescopes still serve as crucial instruments to enable us to understand the universe. You can find out more about telescopes and science by applying these ideas for fun, educational science projects.

  • A telescope enables an observer to view faraway objects by means of two lenses - the objective lens and the eyepiece lens. Studying how these lenses work in conjunction with one another in order to extend the observer's field of vision would comprise an excellent science project. Using the principles you learn, you could even construct a working telescope and test it out on the night sky!
  • The technology involved in constructive telescopes has advanced far since Galileo's day. How do contemporary space telescopes - such as the Hubble Space Telescope - work and what sorts of abilities do they have? A research project on one of today's space telescopes or observatory telescopes would be an excellent way of learning about the applications of science and technology in our world.
  • Another way to use telescopes and science is by directly collecting your observations about the stars you see. Which constellations can you spot? Which are more frequently visible, and which are harder to get a glimpse of? Science ideas for projects include making a map of your observations and displaying it on a poster board or in a PowerPoint presentation.
  • The more you learn about telescopes and science, the more fascinated you will be. Find out more about astronomy for kids and explore additional science projects and ideas.
