Intense but interesting microbiology science fair projects...
The first option that you have from our 2 month science fair project ideas on microbiology is to grow and study bacteria cultures. To complete this project you will need agar, petri dishes and bacteria spores or starter cultures. You can collect bacteria in your house or at school. To grow your cultures simple place the bacteria in a petrie dish that has an agar lining. Make periodic observations about your bacteria colonies over the course of 2 months. The second option that you have for 2 month science fair project ideas on microbiology is to study the development of amoeba populations in an aquarium. For this project you will want to start with an aquarium and several gallons of pond water. Start your experiment by taking an amoeba count per liter. Each week conduct the same count and notice how the populations of amoebas increase or decrease. The third option that you have for long term microbiology science fair projects is to grow mold colonies. Mold can be grown on just about anything. In your experiment see what food items grow mold the fastest, and which ones seem to have natural anti-mold characteristics. Use your findings to suggest further research projects or experiments. The fourth long term project that you can complete is to examine how the bacteria strains found in your kitchen change over the course of 2 months. For this experiment you will want to grow bacteria cultures from wipe downs of your countertops every week. As you grow your bacteria cultures try to identify what strains of bacteria are present in your home and determine if you need to make adjustments to your cleaning routine. If you are lucky enough to come down with a cold then collect your mucus and experiment with it through the progression of your cold. While this experiment may not last the full two months, it will provide you with biological organisms that you can examine, study and experiment with for at least a couple of weeks. You can extend the length of your experiment by trying to keep your cold bug alive for two months outside of your body. Is this possible? If yes, what does this say about the cold virus?
