Middle school science pulley projects can be simple or complex. They can also be used as the basis for an in class demonstration, a class project or as physics science fair projects

However, no matter what reason you have for completing a pulley project, you first need to understand how pulleys work.

The first step in developing your middle school science pulley projects is to learn what a pulley is and how it works. This information can be found easily in your text book or online. While you conduct your research make sure learn how much weight a single pulley reduces a load by, and how the weight is further reduced by combining pulleys. After you complete your background research you can move on to step number two - completing a sample experiment.

Simple Pulley Experiment

In your compound machine project you may show how a set of pulleys may be used to lift heavy objects effortlessly. Show how pulleys are used to lift trucks, other heavy objects and people. Optionally use a spring scale to show how pulleys reduce the force needed to lift heavy objects.

As you can see, middle school science pulley projects can be very simple. However, simple projects aren't going to win science fairs. If you are interested in winning a science fair with your pulley project then you are going to have to develop a unique angle and make it interesting.

One way to make your pulley projects more interesting is to come up with science fair project ideas that incorporate numerous pulleys working together to reduce the force needed to lift something. For example you can develop physics science fair projects that look at how different pulley set ups can make lifting a friend easier to do. Or you can develop a pulley system that is adjustable to make lifting various types of items easier to do.

To pack the most punch with your science experiment you need to infuse its design with a wow factor. For example, you can create a pulley system that is capable of lifting a huge amount of weight, like the entire basketball team, or you can create a compact pulley system that is capable of handling a specific job like lifting a single person's weight. The key to developing a winning project is to be creative and to be innovative. In many cases you will need to think outside the box in order to come up with science fair project ideas and middle school science pulley projects that the judges haven't seen before.
