An add-on kit to the PicoTurbine Educational Windmill. When you order the DC kit and Windmill kit they come packaged together.
The DC Experiments Kit will increase the number of experiments you can do with the
PicoTurbine Educational Windmill Kit. It provides you with all the materials you need to learn about converting the AC electricity produced by PicoTurbine into DC electricity.
The comprehensive instruction guide shows you how to build 4 different circuits and test them. No soldering is required, because the kit includes a solderless breadboard and jumper wires. Just follow the simple instructions to connect together the parts and perform the experiments!
Each kit includes all parts that you will need:
Four diodes
Two electrolytic capacitors
A solderless breadboard and 8 jumper wires
One piezo buzzer
One bicolor LED
Instruction booklet, including teacher's guide and technical notes.
You need no tools to perform these experiments. It is assumed you already have built a
PicoTurbine. Also, if you happen to have a
multimeter that can display AC/DC volts then this is instructive for measuring voltages in the circuits for some of the experiments, but it is not necessary.
Experiments use the bicolor LED to let students "see" the difference between alternating and direct current. Also, the piezo buzzer is used to allow students to "hear" the difference between smoothed and unsmoothed DC current. These innovative methods allow the kit to be affordable but still give students a hands-on feeling for the concepts involved.
Circuits explained include:
A simple half-wave rectifier,
A half-wave rectifier with smoothing capacitors,
A full wave "bridge" rectifier with and without smoothing, and
A voltage doubling rectifier.
Many adults who are considering home power systems will profit from the lessons taught by these simple experiments. Each experiment takes from 10 to 15 minutes to perform, a perfect length of time for classroom use.
