1st prize winning science fair projects have one thing in common, originality. Super cool and original science fair projects not only will help you to gain the judges' attention, but they will also help you to blow your competition out of the water. Below you will find five ideas for earth science projects.

Here are our picks to do a prize winning project

Earth science experiments can be a lot of fun, however, they can also help you to win your science fair. The first hypothesis that you can test is that small rock particles are more resistant to heat than larger rock particles are. To test this hypothesis you will need to apply a heat source to a variety of rock particle sizes, such as sand, pebbles, gravel and boulders. Sunlight works well as a safe heat source.

Another earth science option that you have for 1st prize winning science fair projects is to test the hypothesis that the earth makes a very efficient insulator. To test this experiment you will see if items kept in a deep hole in the earth will stay cool over time. This experiment basically tests the philosophy behind the old root cellars used by pioneers.

The third earth science experiment that you can complete is to test the hypothesis that water can be filter more effectively via natural processes than artificial processes. This will be a challenging experiment if you don't have access to a natural artesian well or water spring. The independent variable in this experiment will be the filtration system for the water, and the dependent variable will be the cleanliness of the water after being filtered. You may need to rely partially on existing data to complete this experiment.

Geothermal experiments can be an exciting option to take if you are interested in creating a winning science fair project. Since everyone is interested in finding new energy sources you can develop a science fair project that examines the potential of geothermal energy systems. For example, you can look at utilizing the heat from steam vents or hot springs to generate energy. Examples of existing geothermal energy sources can be found in Iceland.

Tectonics is another interesting topic that you can work with when developing your science fair projects. Sample experiments that you can expand upon include: seismology experiments, underwater tectonic experiments and the experiments that look at how tectonics impact weather patterns.
