Science fair projects 8-12 level are going to be significantly more challenging than free kindergarten science fair projects. High school science projects and experiments need to be complete, interesting and innovative. The same old experiments that middle school students work on won't cut it at a high school science fair. Below are five topics that you can work with to develop a winning high school science fair project.

These kits have helped kids to win at their high school science fair.

The first topic genre that your science fair projects 8-12 level can have is biology. Biology topics include everything from reproduction to cell structure experiments. However, at the high school level, judges will expect you to be able to apply what you have learned in biology class to answer a specific question. For example, you can develop a project that answers the questions, "Does gravity affect the direction that roots grow in a plant?"

The second topic genre that your science fair projects 8-12 level can have is chemistry. High school level chemistry projects will deal with more advanced subject and will rely on the student's understanding of the periodic table. It is a good idea to have a science poster that depicts the periodic table on hand when working on your project. Polymer development is a great option for this type of experiment.

The third topic genre that your projects can have is astronomy. Again you will need to think beyond just building models of the solar system if you want to win a high school science fair. As a high school scientist you have the skills needed to tackle complex projects like calculating the distance to specific stars using their perceived brightness. If you live in an area that has an observatory, like Los Angeles, then see if you can use the telescope with the supervision of a staff member to complete your experiment. To sweeten the deal you can offer to exchange volunteer time for access to the telescope.

The fourth topic genre option is computer science. This topic is perfect for hackers and technology experts. Computer science projects can explore computers themselves, or they can utilize computers to explore other topics. Example projects include using computers to calculate pie out to the 100,000th place and using computers to create 3D art images. This project topic genre is very popular right now, and projects with computer topics generally qualify for a number of special awards and prizes.

The final topic genre that you can work with is energy. High school energy projects will most likely deal with finding new fuels for automobiles, or designing vehicles that run on fuels other than gasoline. This is a great topic to choose if you are interested in pursuing a degree in science, as there are many special science competitions that involve developing alternative fuel cars.
