Your library science teacher is a key person in helping you to find information when you do your science fair project and research background information. Like a great sleuth, uncover as much as possible about your science fair project and research your topic throughly before conducting your experiment. This helps you to understand your topic.

Before you begin, print this scientific method outline sheet because it will help keep you on track for your science fair project and research.

For your science fair project and research Science Projects Log write several questions to help focus and limit your background research. Here are some possible hypotheses questions to guide you in formatting a Big Question about your topic.

  1. Read books, magazines, journals and search the internet on your topic.

    It is very important to primarily use scientific literature as references opposed to popular literature such as magazines and newspapers. The judges will check to see if you used original research. What is original research? It is a research project that followed the scientific method.

    Where do you find original research?

     · Speciality Magazines that target a specific interest report on research projects. Listed in the article is the source of the original research. Audubon is one example. Here are more science magazines for your science fair project and research.

     · Also, ask your school or local librarian how to do search in "ERIC" for original research.

    Look at the date of the research pertaining to your topic. Science information gets outdated fast.

    You will need the following information for your report:

    · Books: Name of book, author, publisher, copyright date, pages read or quoted.

    · Journals and Science Magazines page 2: Name, volume, number and date of publication, title of article, author, pages read or quoted.

    · Newspapers: Name, date, section and pages of newspaper, author, title of article.

    · Encyclopedia: Name, volume, number, publisher, copyright date, title, author, pages of article.

    · Science Fair software packages: Name of program, version or release number, name of supplier, and place where supplier is located.

    · Documents online: Title, author and date of article, organization that posted the document, organization's location, online address.

During the time you are doing your science fair project and research, keep a page in your Science Projects LOG that is titled: Possible Supplies I Will Need for My Project. Start making a list.
