Are you wondering what it takes to write a good abstract for your science research paper? If the task seems daunting to you, it need not be. Here are some useful tips on how to write an easy abstract - literally, in minutes.

  • It may seem counterintuitive at first, but writing a paper does not require you to write every section in the order it appears. It is perfectly legitimate - indeed, often preferable - to write the abstract last. This is one of the most important insights in learning how to write an easy abstract.
  • Once you have written the rest of your paper, you know exactly what it is about, and its main thoughts have been firmly impressed on your mind. In the abstract, just summarize the main points of your science fair project in a paragraph or two in the order that they appear.
  • Remember: you do not have to be bound from the onset of the writing process by the framework created in your abstract. Rather, write the paper however you think is best, and then make the abstract reflect the natural structure of the paper. Then nobody will possibly be able to say that you have drifted off-topic, because the abstract and the paper will correspond precisely! This is another key recognition regarding how to write an easy abstract, and get a better response from your teachers, peers, and other readers.
  • Think of the abstract as a series of guideposts for your reader. What are the main points you want the reader to take out of your paper? Write the abstract so that your basic areas of exploration, your methods, your observations, and your conclusions are laid out clearly, though not in too much detail. Keep the abstract concise and engaging so that the readers will want to read your full description of your project. A good abstract might attract more readers to the main body of your paper.

Take a look at this sample abstract for a research paper on Pythagorean triples.

"An algorithm for deriving every possible fundamental Pythagorean triple already exists, but other ways of approaching such derivations are possible. This paper explores the mathematical relationship between the right triangles formed by fundamental Pythagorean triples and the radii of circles inscribed within those triangles."

"It will be shown that it is possible to generate fundamental Pythagorean triples from just these inscribed circle radii. Furthermore, it will be demonstrated that there are multiple sequences of inscribed circle radii, each of which can be used to generate a distinct sequence of fundamental Pythagorean triples."

Recognizing how to write an easy abstract is not hard to learn. When you do learn it, you will be able to approach your high school math science project with a lot more confidence.
