The first taste of science that many kids get is from grade school science projects. The quality of the projects and how they are presented generally creates the first impression students have about science. If you are a teacher or a parent then you will want to take steps to ensure that your student's first experiences with science are fun and exciting.

There are several things that you will want to take into consideration when planning grade school science projects. First of all you will want to select a project that your students will be able to understand and complete. Projects that are too difficult will only confuse your students and make them dread science. Next you will want to select a science project that supplements what you are teaching in class. It is always a good idea to gradually build on concepts that have already been introduced to your students. Finally you will want to select a project that examines a science topic in an interesting, fun or exciting manner. You may want to check out some of our best science projects booksor science magazines for ideas.

While classroom science projects may be appropriate and fun, they are generally not good science fair projects. Science fair projects need to build on classroom experiments and create a unique look at the science concepts introduced in class. Brainstorming and researching previously completed science fair projects are both good ways to come up with new science fair projects that will do well in competition.

Grade school science projects that are designed for science fairs need to meet the expectations of the science fair judges. Winning middle school science fair projects will need to (1) follow the scientific method, (2) have a well defined hypothesis, (3) have a well designed experiment and (4) have an attractive and comprehensive presentation. Some of the science fair experiments that grade school teachers can do with their middle school students include:

  • Wind velocity experiments

  • Solar battery experiments

  • Electric car design

  • Robotics
  • In order for high school students to place in a science fair, their projects will need to be more professional looking than grade school science projects. Judges are going to look for the same things they looked for in middle school projects, however, they will also be looking for (1) uniqueness, (2) design quality, (3) ingenuity, (4) relevancy and (5) innovativeness. Generally your students will not do well if they have simply copied the design of past years' winning projects. However, similar projects are fine as long as the student has re-invented it enough to make it unique. Some of the science fair projects that high school students may want to modify for their entries include:

  • Reversible Fuel Cells

  • Solar Ovens

  • Waste digesting organisms

  • Oil clean up polymers
