Build Your Own RC Car for Your Science Fair
Your science fair project need not be a static display or a collection of research. Your project could move, perform stunts, and give great thrills to you and to other participants at the science fair. Building a remote control car of your own can also teach you a lot about mechanics and engineering. How can you make your own RC car as a science project? Let's find out!
- The first step in building an RC car is choosing and obtaining the parts. Do you want to build a nitro RC car or an electric RC car? There are excellent remote control car kits of both varieties, available from tens of manufacturers. Check with your instructor if you can assemble a car from one of these kits for your project. You can also get hundreds of separate RC car accessories with which to upgrade your vehicle and enable it to stand apart from the crowd.
- How can you make your own RC car as a science project? Depending on your choice of RC car, you will be working with a nitro RC car engine or an electric motor. With a nitro engine, you will also need RC car fuel - a mixture of nitromethane, methanol, and an oil base. Other parts will include a suspension system, a chassis, and RC car bodies - which can be any of thousands of different kinds.
- You'll need a wide variety of tools for assembly, including hobby knives, flush cutters, screwdrivers, needle-nose and slip-joint pliers, and channel-lock pliers for nitro RC cars.
- When you build your own RC car as a science project, you can keep a log of your assembly progress as well as do some research on what each part of the RC car does and what the physics principles behind it are. Doing this will give you a better understanding of the assembly process and of why the car is put together the way it is. It will also furnish an integrated and fun science experience. You'll get to see physics in action and understand why your car can do all the exciting things it is capable of.
How can you make your own RC car as a science project in a fun, effective, educational manner? Remember to be patient and careful and to try to understand the purpose behind each step in the assembly. This will lead to a smooth, enjoyable building process.
