  • What will you need to get your solar oven to work? A simple pizza box will do. Find some tape and scissors, some aluminum foil, some black construction paper, and some clear plastic wrap. Also get some newspapers, notebook paper, pen or pencil, and a ruler. Surely, you have all of these lying around the house somewhere!
  • When you start building the oven, keep the box in a closed position. Then put a piece of paper on top of the box and trace around it with a pen or pencil. Then remove the paper. Create a flap on the box lid by cutting one short edge and two long edges of the rectangle you just drew. Fold the flap back in the direction of the edge you did not cut.
  • There's more to do for these solar energy science projects for kids! You'll need to put aluminum foil on the inside of the flap you just made and tape it securely so that the tape does not show; it is essential to have the surface of the foil exposed to sunlight.
  • What comes next in this cool kids' project? Open up the box and put a sheet of black construction paper on the bottom; solar heat will be absorbed by the black sheet. Then close the box and put some rolled-up newspaper around its inner edges. The newspapers will serve to insulate your oven.
  • To complete exciting solar energy science projects for kids such as this one, cut two plastic wrap pieces that are slightly bigger (by one inch) than the opening of the flap. Open the box and use tape to attach one piece of plastic wrap underneath the opening. Make sure the plastic wrap is very tight and taped on all four sides. Then, after closing the box, tape the second plastic wrap piece to the top of the flap opening. That's it! Your solar oven is ready to bake!
