Creative Ways to Apply the Scientific Method
How do kids use the scientific method? At first, it might seem that the scientific method only has a place in the science lab. But in fact, the scientific method is relevant in all areas of our lives. Everyday living can be improved by applying the scientific method in small ways. The younger kids are when they learn how to do this, the more effective they will be at it. The scientific method is fascinating and fun!
- The scientific method consists of several steps. First, there is some initial observation that sparks the scientist's curiosity and leads him or her to form a hypothesis about the phenomenon in question. To test the hypothesis, one designs a science experiment and collects further data and observations. Based on the data, the hypothesis is rejected or not rejected.
- An important principle in science is that we can never prove a hypothesis with certainty; we can only fail to reject it. If enough tests fail to falsify a hypothesis, then we can rely on it - at least until new evidence comes up. Hypotheses that have stood the test of time become incorporated into larger systematic explanations of how particular aspects of the world works. These explanations are called theories or models.
- So how do kids use the scientific method? Young children especially are learning about the world around them all the time - taking in new information from their physical and social environment. Based on their observations, they form thousands of little hypotheses about how the world works. Often, they want to do hands-on experiments to see whether things work the way they suspect.
- This natural desire can be harnessed and used greatly enrich a young child's understanding and experiences. If you explain the scientific method to kids using terminology they can understand, they will love it! It is so similar to what they are already implicitly doing that they will find the scientific method intuitive and relevant. How do kids use the scientific method? With great pleasure!
When you give children cool things to interact with, they become even more attracted to science! The young scientists club science kit set is designed for just that purpose. How do kids use the scientific method? The answer depends in part on the resources with which you provide them.
