Sports science experiments take a closer look at bowling...
Bowling ball science fair projects are a ball! Not only do you get to play around while experimenting, but you also get to learn new tricks and tips that could improve your bowling game. There are a lot of great sports science experiments that you can create that utilize a bowling ball, however, the topics that will be covered in this article include: buoyancy, bouncing, the physics of bowling and the mechanics of bowling. One of the most popular of all bowling ball science fair projects is the floating bowling ball experiment. In this experiment you take bowling balls of different weights and place them in a large tub of water. The bowling balls float to the surprise of the experiment. Your job is to explain why they float instead of sinking to the bottom of the tub. Another option that you have for bowling ball science fair projects is to look at how much bounce bowling balls have. Apparently all bowling balls will bounce at least a little bit. In this experiment you will examine what factors contribute to how much a bowling ball bounces. You will want to look at the weight of the bowling ball, the angle of the release, the force applied to the ball and the angle the ball hits the alley. During the analysis and discussion segments of your experiment you will want to try and develop a formula for bowling ball bounce, or you will want to provide tips on how to minimize or increase bounce. The next topic that you can explore with your bowling ball experiments is the physics of bowling balls. Before you start this project consider looking for science posters plus that deal with physics formulas, especially ones that related to force and velocity. You will be using these formulas to evaluate the physical factors that impact a bowler's ability to bowl a perfect game. The fourth topic that you can explore with your bowling ball experiments is teh mechanics of bowling. In this experiment you will want to look at the geometry of a bowler's body while they bowl. You will also be using physics formulas to develop calculations of the mechanical force produced by each bowler's approach, swing and release. You can then use this information to determine how bowlers can use the shape, size and weight of their body and the weight of their bowling ball to maximize thier bowling scores. While bowling ball science fair projects can be a lot of fun for the student scientist, they can be a little bit boring to judges. To ensure your project isn't a snoozer, you need to make sure the hypothesis that you select to work with is unique and interesting. Then you need to create a visual display that is fun, informative and entertaining. You may also want to add a physical demonstration that involves the judges. This will help to energize them about your project, however, make sure the interactive portion of your project's presentation is safe and fun.
