While surfing the internet, I came across a fascinating “new” method of organic gardening called aquaponics. This method of gardening makes use of a combination of hydroponics and fish farming. This system is based on the natural relationship between plants and animals, which has worked since the beginning of time.  The plants rely on the nutrients deposited into the water by the animals, in the form of the expelled waste. These nutrients are then absorbed by the plants, thereby eliminating the need for fertilisers. This process also benefits the fish, in the fact that the water is being filtered and their environment is kept clean.

One of the biggest benefits of this new method of farming is that it requires very little maintenance and thereby reduces the capital outlay. The amount of produce that can be harvested is greatly increased and growth time is shortened. Weeding and tilling of your garden is no longer an issue, as there is no soil involved. From what I have read on the internet, by using this method, you would be able to increase your yield by 300%. The main factor that you will have to keep an eye on is the level and quality of the water. If these two factors are kept in a healthy state, then you can rest assured that your system will work.

How it works

The fish are placed into the water solution in which the plants are growing. This is the basis of your entire system, which is why you will have to ensure that the water levels, as well as nutrient levels, are kept in check. As the fish go about their normal business, they will provide additional nutrients for your plants. The plants, in turn, will provide shelter for them to reproduce and your “ecosystem” will thrive.

Materials

The easiest method by far of obtaining all of the correct materials would be to search and shop for them online. This method is quickly gaining in popularity and there are even a few courses being offered online to ensure that you start off on the right foot and enjoy the full benefits of what aquaponics has to offer.

Aquaponics can be done on a small scale in your backyard or on a large scale. With the correct training and equipment, you will be able to enjoy the organic fruits of your labour.

 This is a very common question that students ask when they are presented with the task of completing a science fair project. The answer to this question is not as simple as it may first seem. After all the student needs to take into consideration how much time they have available to complete their project, what seeds are available, what their climate will support and what hypothesis they want to test. All of these factors will influence what type of plant will work the best for a science project.

Generally students will want to focus on common plants that have a short lifespan, such as peas and beans. This will ensure that they can find the seeds and that they can get the seeds to germinate and grow to maturity within the time allotted for the science project. Seeds for these common garden plants can be purchased throughout the year either through local department and garden stores, or through mail order companies.

If the student is interested in conducting hybridization experiments then the best plants to work with will be either flowering plants or plants that can reproduce through grafting. Hybridization of flowers is done by cross pollinating flowers. This can be done using a cotton swab and a steady hand. Hybridization of plants that can be grafted is done by taking a cutting from one plant and grafting it, or securing it, to a cut portion of the second plant. These experiments can produce new flower colors or fruit varieties.

 Plant science fair projects are very popular with students, particularly ones that deal with pea plants and bean plants. If the student is interested in making their science fair project stand out then they will need to find a new angle to use, such as the experimentation on tropical plants or the creation of a new strain of plant, flower or fruit.

In these projects the student may need to purchase a plant that has already reached maturity. This will help the student to conduct pollination and hybridization experiments immediately.

Time is always a concern for students working on a science fair project. If the student is getting a late start on their project then working with a mature plant is the best option. However, if they are interested in pursuing a more complex and time consuming project then they may want to consider working on a longitudinal study that spans multiple school years. These projects will offer the student notoriety at their science fair.

My friends and I had been walking for over an hour when we came across a new building called, Plant Science Center which is an educational center that does research on plants that are invading the plants that are native to Illinois. Their purpose is to conserve the rapidly declining floral heritage of this area.

How they work: “Plants of Concern engages volunteers to monitor rare plant species. These citizen scientists receive training, visit sites throughout the Chicago Wilderness region, and collect data on the health of rare plant populations. These data are then shared with landowners who use the information to help with management decisions to protect rare plants.” They also exchange data with the Natural Heritage Databases in participating states.

So what does this have to do with science fair projects? Well, you can start researching the area in which you live to find out if there are species of plants that were brought to the U.S. from other countries that may be destroying the natural flora in your area.

Then see if you can be forth the awareness of your community, and if there isn’t a Plants of Concern.org in your area, start one. Create a research project, do an experiment, and make a difference.

One option that you have for your science fair project is to look at seed stratification. Seed stratification is the dormant phase that a seed experiences before it will germinate. The length of time that a seed spends in the stratification or dormancy phase varies by plants. Some plants do not have a stratification process while others have stratification periods that surpass a year.

There are several angles that you can take when developing a seed stratification science fair project. The first option that you have is to determine what advantage there is to having a dormant period before germinating. The second option is to determine how the length of dormancy impacts the success rate of a plant’s seedling.
