Obviously, since we are in the last week of November, holiday candy is all around you. This candy can be a great subject for chromatography science fair projects. For example, you can see if the green dye used for M&Ms is made up of the same color bases as the green dye used for the candy shell on a generic brand of chocolate candies.

Candy is not the only type of holiday food that you can use as test subjects for your chromatography experiments. Holiday drinks can also be tested using chromatography paper as well. For example, you can test holiday punches, soda pop and, with adult supervision, holiday wines.

To prepare a solution to be tested using chromatography paper you will need to mix liquid with dry particles. For example, to create a chromatography solution with M&Ms all you have to do is to dip the M&M in water and run it against the bottom of a chromatography paper strip. If your test subject is already in liquid form all you have to do is dip the end of the test strip in the fluid.
