What science fair projects can I do on cancer?

Cancer science fair projects are good options for students that either know someone that is dealing with cancer or that is dealing with it on a personal level. Here the projects will focus on the prevention, treatment or recovery from the cancer. This type of project will require extensive background research and meticulously designed experiments.

Prevention Science Fair Projects

The first type of cancer science fair project that is available for students to complete will deal with the prevention of specific types of cancers. In order to develop this type of cancer project the student will need to conduct research on what is suspected of causing the cancer that they are researching. They can then try to design an experiment that will manipulate these factors in order to reduce cancer risk rate factors. For example, gene mutations can be the cause of cancer. In order to prevent these mutations nutrition can be used to support the healthy propagation of cells.

Treatment Science Fair Projects

Cancer treatment science fair projects are another viable option for students who want to produce a memorable project. These projects will focus on the testing of existing treatments options, or they will focus on alternative treatment options that patients have. For example, the student can test the ability of traditional medicines, i.e. herbs and homeopathic remedies, to control symptoms of cancer such as nausea, memory loss, hair loss and pain. Exercises can also be used as an alternative treatment for cancer science project experiments. In each case the student will need to recruit cancer patients to test their treatment hypotheses on.

Recovery Science Fair Projects

The recovery stage of cancer can be an important one to target when conducting research. Here the projects will focus on what helps or hinders a cancer patient’s recovery. For example, you can test the effects of nicotine on the ability of cells to recover from cancer treatments, or you can test the effects of a healthy diet on the recovery rate of cancer patients. In these projects students can either work with cancer patients that are in the process of recovery, or they can work with biological samples, such as skin cells or blood cells.

What You’ll Need

If you are planning on working on a cancer science fair project then there are several items that you will need. To begin with you will need a good microscope. You will also need access to medical journals. Finally you will need access to people that have cancer or that are recovering from cancer.

You are now about half way through your winter break. Have you come up with your science fair project idea yet? If not don’t worry. You still have about a week to come up with an idea and to conduct your initial research.

One strategy that you can use to come up with an idea for your science fair project is to read through sample science fair projects. Sample science fair projects will not only provide you with information about a potential topic for your science fair project, but they will also provide you with a guide for how to write up your own science fair project.

Sample science fair projects can be obtained from a number of sources. The Internet is your best resource. Students post their winning science fair projects online, as do websites designed for science fair project products. You can use these samples to see what has done well in the past, as well as to find out what topics are not being received by science fair judges favorably. For example, right now electricity experiments and energy experiments are be encouraged as the foci for science fair projects because of the need for new energy technologies to be developed.

Keep in mind that you can not simply reproduce sample projects and turn them in as your own. This is basically project plagiarism. However, you can take a sample project and modify it so that it is unique. For example, you can change the variables being compared, you can apply the results from the sample project to a new question or problem or you can increase the depth of the experiment by completing more trials, by experimenting with more input variables or by making some other type of modification.

The year is almost over and before you know it your science fair project will be due. With your winter break now in front of you, you have plenty of time to research topics and to come up with a great idea for your entry into upcoming science fairs. However, if you are going to invest your time and effort into creating a science fair project, you will want to make sure you select a topic that will give you every advantage possible.

To start with you will want to think about what topics are hot right now. To find hot science topics read through this year’s newspaper headlines. Identify the issues that made the news more than once. For example, alternative fuels were big this last year, as were the issues related to global warming. Create a list of hot topics to conduct further research on.

As you research your hot topics you will want to start segregating your topics into two categories, interested in and not interested in. The topics that just don’t peak your interest you will want to file under not interested in. These are the topics that you will not be developing into a science fair project. However, the topics that are filed under “interested in” will be further developed.

With a short list of possible topics to work with, your next step is to narrow this list down to a single topic. To do this you will want to select the topic that has the most potential to be developed into a unique and interesting project. Try to avoid topics that have been selected by other people in your school, or topics that you know have been over done. However, if all you are left with are highly used topics you can still create a unique project by applying that topic to a unique question or problem.

This week I’d like to start a new blog series on science fair project ideas. This week I’ll be talking about ideas for 24-hour science fair projects that involve cell phones and elliptical machines. Both of these items can be found in many homes, at school or at a local store.

The first science fair project idea that I came up with this week is to use cell phone cases and accessories as your experiment’s subject. For example, how about design a cell phone case that recharges your cell phone using solar energy. What other project ideas can you come up with for cell phone accessories like chargers, faceplates and charging stations?

The second group of science fair projects that I was thinking about this week involve elliptical machines. Elliptical machines are pieces of exercise equipment that utilize the natural elliptical motion of our legs. Project ideas using an elliptical machine include heart rate projects, sweat projects and geometry projects. One project you can put together is to determine if the elliptical shape used by these machines really do reflect the natural motion of our legs.

For more ideas on science fair projects visit a homeschool science store.

I have been scouring the Internet for science fair project blogs for our readers. One I came across is actually put out by USA Today. It is a great reference for finding news stories on science fairs and science fair projects. Check out this blog if you need a little extra help coming up with your science fair project ideas.

This week I’d like us all to think outside of the box when thinking up terrific science fair projects. To do this I’d like you to think about your favorite science fiction novel or television series. What theories and concepts do these sources use that have yet to be applied to modern living. For example, time travel and warp speed.

The first type of kids science fair projects that you can develop using science fiction as your inspiration is to look at what science fiction concepts of the past have been proven to be true or valid technologies. For example, space travel was a major theme for science fiction before the 19th century. Today it is a very real technology. Build your project around how past science fiction theories were proven and how these technologies can be further developed. You can also build working models of some of the concepts that have been proven, like a model rocket, space craft, etc.

The second type of science fiction science fair project that you can develop is one that looks at how you can prove a current science fiction theme. This project genre can be tricky as you will have to apply the scientific method for kids to abstract ideas. However, you can use current research and findings to help support the notion that some of these fictional theories could be proven true in the near future. If you want, you can even try to find a way to prove a science fiction theme is actually science fact.

The Super Science Fair Projects Blog is here to help you create a great science fair project. Use the comment box below to ask questions, get help with your project or to make suggestions about future topics you would like this blog to cover.

Last week we started a series on how to generate science fair project ideas. Today I’d like to continue this discussion. Today’s idea generation strategy is going to look at using your surroundings as inspiration for a project.

The first place that you will want to look for inspiration for science project ideas is around your house. To do this you will need a notebook and a pen or pencil. Walk around your house and start asking yourself questions such as how does the air conditioning unit cool hot air from outside or why do you use baking soda in cookies. Jot down these questions in your notebook. You can go back later and figure out what scientific concepts can be used to answer the question. As you learn more about each question that you ask you can start to put together science projects.

Once you have exhausted the resources in your home, you can look in other places like your school, neighborhood and shopping centers for inspiration. Again jot down questions you come up with as you explore your world. For example, you may want to learn how birds navigate during their migration to your area or what makes a neon light different from an LED light. If you are having a hard time coming up with questions just jot down things and interactions that you see, for example, you might see a robin eating a worm. You can jot this observation down and later come up with questions for that observation such as: how many worms do robins eat each day, when do robins eat, do robins eat anything other than worms, etc.?

Do you have an idea for super science fair projects? Or, do you need help coming up with a project idea? Either way post your comments below and I’ll try to address questions that come up in future blogs.

We’ve spent a lot of time over the last few months talking about science in the news. Today I’d like to talk to you about how to come up with a great science fair idea using the Internet. These strategies are simple and just about anyone with internet access can use them.

The first thing that you can use the Internet for is to research the latest science developments and research projects. There are dozens of online libraries that you can access for free and many others that you can subscribe to. If money is an issue, look for free science libraries and free article databases to use for your research. You can also use the Internet to research science competitions that you can enter and to research winning school science fair projects. You can then use this information to develop a winning science fair project of your own.

Another great way to develop a science fair project idea is to watch other kids demonstrate their science fair projects on via a video website. YouTube is a great site that allows you to watch science fair project videos for free. As you watch the video, take notes about what you like about the project, what science concept is being tested and the pros and cons of the experiment’s design. You can then take these notes and expand upon the project or develop an even better experiment or project.

Do you have a science fair questions or project recommendation? If you do post it below in the comment box. I’ll try to answer questions in future Super Science Fair Projects blog postings.

Last Friday I came across a news article that I think would make a great escalator for science classroom discussions. This news article discussed pharming.

Pharming is a process by which scientists alter the genes of a plant in order to produce new drugs. This is not a new science issue, as it was experimented with in the Midwest years ago. However, the new problem is that despite the failure of previous attempts, scientists are trying this experiment again, this time in California.

Professor Danielle is the lead scientists in the latest push for the development of pharming in California. He proposes using lettuce as the vehicle for his pharming initiatives. However, this is a very dangerous experiment as there are (1) no safety standard laws for pharming yet and (2) there really is no way to keep pharming produce from interbreeding with non pharmed produce, or from keeping the pharmed produce out of our regular food supply.

To turn this news story into a classroom discussion you have several angles that you can take. First of all you can use this news story to start a discussion on genetic engineering. You can also use this new story to initiate a discussion about the ethics of science. Finally this news article can be used to inspire students to develop science projects based on genetics, food safety or other related concepts.

Finding inspiration for life science experiments and interesting earth science experiments is not difficult. News articles, scholastic science magazines and current events can all be great resources for information.

Ten days ago this site launches the first 2008 Virtual Science Fair. Today I’d like to discuss tips for making your home green. This information can be used to help your students develop their science project entry for the category “design a green building.”

There are a lot of ways that you can transform your home into a “green home.” To start with you can clear out the clutter in your home. Clutter and items in storage are not being utilized. To get the most from the materials contained in these items you will want to sort the items that you want to keep and the items that you can get rid of. Next you will want to divide the items that you want to get rid of into a recycle pile and a donate pile. The recycled items will allow the raw materials from your unused items to be melted down and re-manufactured into new products, and the donated items will be reused by people who need them.

Conserving energy is another strategy that you can use to turn your home into a green home. Start by evaluating how much energy your family uses. Then find ways to save energy. For example you can use energy efficient appliance, you can turn your heat down one or two degrees in the winter and up one or two degrees in the summer and you can use compact fluorescent light bulbs instead of the incandescent bulbs. Finally, you can add extra insulation to your home to seal up energy leaks.

As you can see there are several ways to conserve energy in your home. These strategies can also be used to generate ideas for renewable energy and ecology science projects which can be entered into our science fair contest.

Last week I talked about the Kyoto University experiment that showed that certain chimps had much better memory skills than college students. This week I want to stay focused on recent life science experiments by looking at a sickle cell anemia experiment that has produced hope for many people struggling with this debilitating disease.

The premise of this experiment was to use new technology to create stem cells from ordinary skin cells, and then use these manufactured stem cells to treat sickle cell anemia in mice. The results are promising. This experimental treatment is proving to be an effective cure for sickle cell anemia in mice and other lab animals. However, right now this treatment is not suitable for humans because it has not been perfected and it occasionally causes tumors to develop. Once this stumbling block has been hurdled human testing may be authorized.

This experiment/news story is a good one to use to talk about science ethics as well as life science experimentation. This particular story is also a practical story to use because it deals with the ethical issues associated with stem cell experimentation. Because the stem cells were created from regular skin cells instead of being harvested from discarded embryos, the dilemma over whether it is morally acceptable is no longer an issue. However, you may want to discuss the drawbacks of using genetic engineering technology to treat and cure diseases and physical deformities.

Life science experiments are always controversial. When working on science fair projects that focus on controversial techniques or concepts you need to do your research and consult experts and science fair books.
