I interviewed several veteran astronomy teachers. When asked what are the best telescopes for elementary and high school students, the consensous was the The Dobsonia.
Caroline Bennett, a 20-year veteran teacher stated, 1) "The Dobsonian is an all-in-one unit; this means that there is no separate tripod to set-up. Elementary through high school students can simply carry it outside, set it on the ground and start viewing.
2). Also, without the tripod the manufacturer is able to give
you more aperture for your dollar. The larger aperture gives you
more objects to view with a lot more detail."
