Grow your own fun interactive tickle me plant... Known as a Sensitive Mimosa or Mimosa pudica
TickleMe plant moves when it is "tickled". When touched the leaflets fold together instantly and reopen immediately. The petiole (stalks) which attaches the leaf blade to the stem, often droops or collapses.
To do a science fair project you will need to grow more than one plant. This economical Deluxe TickleMe Plant Science Fair kit with Greenhouse has everything you need to do an experiment your science fair or homeschooling. The Greenhouse and flower pots can be used over and over again!
Short on Time?
The plant can germinate in as little as 3-4 days if kept at 70 - 90° temperature.
Do experiments on the seeds by changing the variable.
. Soaking the seeds in: boiling water (with adult supervision)?
. cold water? . vinegar or freezing temperatures? . sanding the seeds lightly with sand paper? . microwaving? temperature in the room? . use of various types of soil (compare how many seed germinate)
The first leaves appear in 3 - 4 days. These "seed leaves" do not move when tickled but do close up at night as part of the plants sleep behavior. You can do an experiment by putting a cooking pot over the plant to make it dark to see if the plant goes to sleep in an hour or two. With slightly older plants it takes less than an hour.
Your plants will have a 2nd set of leaves in 14 days if you keep them warm (70° and above). These leaves will move and you can show them off at the science fair.

Keep the following in mind...
The plants sprout in less than a week. The first leaves will not react to being tickled but will close up and sleep at night. A week later the first set of leaves will be very reactive to being tickled. The warmer the plants the faster they sprout and grow!

High School ≈ Will using artificial light opposed to natural light affect the normal circadian rhythm of the TickleMe Plant?
Circadian rhythms are physical, mental and behavioral changes that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle, responding primarily to light and darkness in an organism’s environment.
They are found in most living things, including animals, plants and many tiny microbes. The study of circadian rhythms is called chronobiology.
≈ Using a microscope (ask your teacher if you can use one in school), examine the cells to determine if one part of the plant is more sensitive than others.
Middle School ≈ Will different day lengths (time that the plant is exposed to light - using fluorescent lighting) affect the flower production of the TickleMe Plant?
≈ Compare TickleMe Plant growth in different mediums: sand, soil, peat pellets, coco pellets.
Primary Grades ≈ Test too see which object your plant is more sensitivie to: your finger or an ice cube? Your finger or velvet, wool cloth or silk material?
Remember to compare only two variables.
