Science Fair Project Ideas
~ Build the turbine windmill according to the directions in the manuals. Then improve upon the design. What did you discover? What new experiments were you able to create?
~ Use different materials for the blades or shell of the turbine. Which one was most efficient.
~ Do more magnets and coils mean more energy output? Remember you have to use equal numbers of magnets to coils.
Exampe hypothesis: A wind turbine built with a light plastic produces more energy than when you use cardboard. (be every specific as to the type of materials that you use)

PicoTurbine Windmill Kit V2 is a fully functioning Savonius wind turbine. It stands 8" tall and produces between 2.0-3.0 volts which is enough to light up a bicolor LED (included). The LED flashes red and green to show the alternating current produced.
The kit can be easily built in less than one hour. With some adult supervision the kit can be built by children as young as 10 years old.
Included in the PicoTurbine Windmill Kit V2
- 4 pre-wound coils of enamel coated copper wire
- 4 ceramic grade-5 magnets
- 1 (5 1/4) disk
- 1 bicolor light emitting diode (LED) with 2 leads
- 1 (1/2) Phillips head (cross slot) screw
- 1 eye-hook screw
- 1 wooden dowel
- 1 piece of wood about 6 by 6 and ½ thick (for the base)
- 1 strip of double-sided tape
- 1 small piece of sandpaper for stripping the copper wire

PicoTurbine Windmill Kit V2 is an upgraded version of the original PicoTurbine which has been used by tens of thousands of students, homeschoolers, and even adult hobbyists to learn about Savonius Vertical Axis wind power. Its perfect for teaching about Wind Energy in the classroom.

The Rectification kit and the Windmill kit come packaged together.
Each kit includes all parts that you will need:
4 light emitting diode (LED) with 2 leads
2 electrolytic capacitors
1 piezo buzzer
A solderless breadboard and 8 jumper wires
Instructions booklet includes teacher's guide and technical notes. The guide shows you how to build 4 different circuits and test them.
Circuits explained include:
A simple half-wave rectifier,
A half-wave rectifier with smoothing capacitors,
A full wave "bridge" rectifier with and without smoothing, and
A voltage doubling rectifier.
Each experiment can take from 10 to 15 minutes to do, a very good length of time for a classroom demo too.

The Cen-Tech Multimeter is excellent for measuring your output of electricity from all of the PicoTurbines Science Kits. It displays AC millivolts, adds another dimension to your experiments, and helps to tune the alternator.
You will get accurate readings for DC voltage, DC current, AC voltage, resistance, transistor test, diode test, and battery test. Easy-to-read 3-1/2 digit LCD readout, positive set selector switch, and 32" leads. Automatic zero adjust Overange indicator 2.5x second sample time Low battery indicator Fuse and diode protected circuit.

The 10 BioColor LEDs alternate between red and green depending on direction of current flow, making them an excellent accessory for alternating current. They can also be used to show the increase in outage of electricity.

More magnets and coils creates more friction which in turn creates more "static electricity" which in turn creates more voltage. As the project increases you also lose about 1/3 of the voltage increase.

An extra 1 Package of 4 Ceramic Grade-5 Magnets pack of 4-ceramic grade-5 magnets can be used to to scale up PicoTurbine in your own experiments. This means you will be able to create a larger magnetic field.
WARNING! A person who wears a pace-maker must not come anywhere near these magnets.

1 extra package of 4 Coils consists of approximately 300 turns of enamel coated magnet wire, measure approximately 2" x 1" by 1/4" thick, weigh about 1 ounce or [28 grams] and have a resistance of approximately 8 ohms. The coils come preassembled which will save your hours of work.
