A Renewable Energy Education Lab Create a 3-phase wind turbine from a common, everyday roof ventilator along with a few magnets and wire coils. Now you can have fun experimenting with wind technology. The Whirlybird™ Wind Turbine Kit is a rugged, outdoor 3-phase wind turbine that you build and then attach to your computer for experiments. Features It has great bearings that will not wear out under normal – and even severe – use. Without great bearings your wind turbine is always fighting friction that only serves to slow it down with the attendant loss of power. It can be easily constructed with common tools and without soldering or drilling. t can be used indoors and [especially] outdoors where your study of day-to-day and season-byseason wind never stops. It produces 3-phase power just like the commercial wind turbines, which allows you to study this marvelous electrical principle first hand by using your computer and the 3-phase Bar Graph Board. You will be able to modify it in order to study the effects of magnetism and how you can optimize the mechanical components to produce maximum power. The Whirlybird™ Wind Turbine Kit includes: . 12 Wire Coils . 16 Bar magnets . 1 6-position terminal block . 8” diameter round metal rotor disk . 8” diameter round Plexiglas stator disk . 15/16”, 7/8” long threaded rod extender . 15/16", 1 ½" long bolt . 10, 5/16" flat washer . 3, 1" flat washers Not included in the kit: You will need the following tools to assemble: • Roof ventilator - recommended • Safety glasses and protective gloves • Flat head screwdriver Crescent wrench • Grease marking pen Multimeter • Pocket or Exactotm knife 2-part Epoxy Glue + stirring stick • Latex gloves & Safety Glasses Electrical tape • Length of 6-conductor wire (length to be determined by your setup) The software for the 3-Phase Bar Graph Board is sold separately. One of the user licenses described below must be purchased to connect the REEL Power product to your computer. The discount package you choose will determine which license you purchase. The 3-Phase Bar Graph Board interfaces to the WhirlyBird™ Wind Turbine Kit and to a computer. Four columns of LEDs display the 3-phase and rectified voltages. All of their products use the same software. We are including the cost of it in this discount package. It is menu driven so that you can run multiple products with just one software installation. So rather than purchase multiple copies of the same software for each individual product(s), you can choose to purchase either a single-computer license that supports all of the Reel products on a single computer or a multi-computer license that allows you to install the software on any number of computers at your site. MAC users - this is strictly Windows software - you must install Parallels "Desktop 3.0 for Windows" With the multi-computer license you can give it to your students to take home to use on their own computer. This is part of REEL's "anytime, anywhere" learning philosophy, which continues to involve students in science and engineering studies outside of the classroom and allows their parents to see what they do in school - a win-win for everyone.
