Harness Wind Power for Science Fair Projects!

image of PicoTurbine Windmill KitWind power is a fascinating and growing renewable energy source. How does it work to generate electrical power? What are its possibilities for the future? Can you personally figure out ways to harness wind power? All these questions and more can be explored in wind power science fair experiments or energy science fair projects.

  • Can you make a wind turbine of your own? It will not be as huge as the wind turbines you might observe while driving on the highway, but it would operate using the same scientific principles. Materials for constructing a wind turbine include blades and generators. Experiment with various possibilities and study how each choice of component will affect your windmill's performance.
  • If you already have a working windmill - whether it is one you built or one that you purchased ready-made - a great science experiment involves seeing how reliable the windmill is at generating electricity. Leave the windmill outside for a particular length of time and see if it generates electricity regularly or sporadically. Might it be possible to position windmills so as to assure a steady generation of electrical power?
  • More outstanding wind power science fair experiments or projects can be done by examining various uses of wind power today. Where is wind power most prevalent geographically? Which kinds of technologies are common? Which technologies work better than others? What are the criteria for workable wind power generation? What is the cost of wind power generation per kilowatt-hour? How does this compare to other sources of energy - including nuclear, fossil fuel, solar, hydrogen, and ethanol power?
  • Another approach to wind power science fair experiments or projects can intertwine science with history and explore the evolution and development of windmills over time. Windmills have been around in Europe since at least the 11th century, and they have been used elsewhere in the world as well. What were early windmills like, and what were they capable of doing? How have they improved over time? What are possibilities for improving windmills still more in the future?
  • There's no shortage of amazing fun to be had with wind power science fair experiments or projects. And once you've explored wind power for as long as you want, maybe some of our other science fair science kits will inspire you and broaden your range of options.
