Do Balls of Different Composition & Size Bounce to Different Heights?

Problem
Balls of different composition and size bounce to different heights. What ball bounce higher out of a ping pong ball and an ordinary tennis ball?

Hello. My name is Adam and I am currently attending Great Lakes College, Tuncurry Junior Campus and am studying yr 10. In science we had our major assignment and had to design and do an experiment. My teacher thought mine was great and would be worthwhile putting into a science competition.

Aim
The aim of this experiment is to find out whether a tennis ball or a ping pong ball bounce higher on the given surface of a ordinary school desk.

Hypothesis
My hypothesis is that the tennis ball will bounce higher rather than the ping pong ball.

The Independent Variable is the tennis ball and the ping pong ball.
The Dependent Variable is the height of bounce.
The Constant Variable are the height dropped from and the surface dropped on.
The Control is the ping pong ball.
The Replication is 5 times.

Materials Needed

  • Big Piece of paper approximately ground height to 90cm
  • A4 paper together
  • 1 Meter Ruler
  • Masking Tape
  • Texta (a pen with a writing point made of felt or fibre)
  • Ping Pong Ball
  • Tennis Ball
  • Method
    1) First start by attaching the paper to the wall so that it reaches about 90cm up the wall.
    2) Next using the masking tape attach the metre ruler to the edge of the piece of paper.
    3) Then put lines going across horizontally at 50cm, 60cm, 70cm and 80cm. This will help to get a more accurate result.
    4) First drop the ping pong ball and record the result.
    5) Then drop the tennis ball and record the result.
    6) After that repeat this process for a further 10 times and record the result to give the most accurate as possible answer.

    Critique by Madeline
    1. Big Question was written as a statement.
    2. The kind of materials used needed to be described. For example; what kind of tape did Adam use (masking, scotch, painters, etc)?
    3. The Results were not written. We don’t know what happened.
