Face Mask Science Experiment

Try this easy and fast cloth face mask protection science experiment. It an excellent science project for all ages as well as learning how to protect yourself, family and friends.

By now most of us know that masks can block the exhale of virus particles (aerosols) into the air around you, which helps keep the virus from spreading. And of course, masks are also a helpful barrier when you cough or sneeze.

But cloth masks, which are often made of materials like cotton, do they protect you from inhaling particles that carry the virus — and with a virus as infectious as COVID or omicron.

And before I give you the free project I must tell you my pet peeves.

  • Wearing any mask below your nose is dangerous,. Read this Discovery Magazine article.
  • Wearing your face mask below your chin or on your neck transfers viruses and germs to another part of your body and does not protect you or anyone else!
  • And this is the best one. Did you ever ask someone to please wear their mask and they say to you while putting their hand in their pocket, “I have a mask!”
  • The mask MUST be worn on the bridge of your nose without your nostrils exposed.

    This project is best done under adult supervision.

    Use a candle that is firmly inserted into a candlestick holder. Place the candlestick holder away from a gas stove or anything that is flammable such as paper.

    Put your mask on and make sure it is on the bridge of your nose. Light the candle. Now blow through your mouth really hard. If the candle flame waivers or blows out your mask does not provide protection to you or anyone else.

    Now get all the different masks that you have in your home that you have collected over the last 1-1/2 years. Do the experiment with each mask.

    The ones that do not give protection, put them away or throw them out.

    I did this experiment with my KN95 mask, blowing as hard as I could and the candle flame did not move.
